1. Pink Butterfly

Aglaonema

‘Pink Butterfly’ Aglaonemas are often vibrant and colorful, with strikingly patterned leaves.

Care

☼   Bright indirect sunlight is optimal and will help the plant produce beautiful pink spots on its leaves. If it is left in full sun, the leaves might burn.

♆   These plants prefer moderate waterings. They like to be kept moist during the spring and summer, but make sure the soil isn’t soggy. It can survive an occasional dry down.

The Aglaonema is moderately toxic to pets and humans. Ingestion will cause mouth and stomach irritation and possible vomiting.

2. Tricolor Oyster

Rhoeo Spathacea

Also know as Moses in the Cradle, this plant is a perennial evergreen succulent with three-toned leaves of pink, green, and cream shades. It drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, and perfect for hanging!

Care

☼  They can grow in medium to bright sun or part shade.

♆   Oyster plants do require good soil drainage. It’s best to water them once per week and mist regularly with a spray bottle.

This plant can cause severe burning pain in the mouth and throat if ingested.

3. Madagascar Dragon Tree

Dracaena marginata

Madagascar dragon tree, also called red-edge dracaena, is one of the most popular houseplants around. It bears narrow green leaves banded in red or pink on top of slender stems.

Care

☼   Dragon Trees prefer bright indirect light, though they can adjust to medium to low levels of light. Keep them out of harsh direct sunlight, as too much of it can scorch their leaves.

♆   Let the plant dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly when the topsoil is dry, usually once a week.

The Dragon Tree is a slow grower. Indoors, the Dragon Tree can reach up to eight feet tall!

4. Pink Nephthytis

Syngonium podophyllum “pink”

This stunning pink arrowhead shaped vining plant, native to the tropics of Central and South America, features shiny green leaves with hints of blush pink foliage and veins.

Care

☼   These plants do best in a position where they receive good light with no direct sunlight.

♆  Arrowheads are fairly thirsty houseplants, especially if they are planted in small containers. Bigger plants will need frequent watering than younger plants. The soil should be evenly moist, and between waterings wait for the soil to dry just a little before watering again.

The arrowhead plant is toxic to humans, dogs, and cats. It can cause mild stomach and mouth irritation.

5. Tricolor Stromanthe

Stromanthe sanguinea

Native to the jungles of Brazil, this lush plant features elegant pointed green leaves splashed with pale green, cream, and pink on top and colored a deep pink, maroon, or magenta underneath.

Care

☼   A spot with bright, indirect light, will allow your plant to thrive while maximizing its coloring. To ensure even growth turn the plant once every two weeks, it likes to reach for the light.

♆   Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. The plant may require less water in winter than in summer.

6. Pink Polka Dot Plant

Hypoestes phyllostachya

The polka dot plant is a cheery and beautiful little plant with brightly spotted leaves.

Care

☼   Bright, indirect light is ideal. If the plant isn’t colorful enough, consider a little direct sunlight, which should deepen the colors.

♆   These plants like a moderate amount of moisture in the soil at all times. Avoid letting the soil dry out, which can cause the foliage to wilt and the plant to struggle. But also never let the soil become soggy, which can cause root rot and kill a plant.

7. Hoya Tricolor

Hoya carnosa variegata

Hoya’s are native to tropical rainforests in eastern Asia and Australia. They have thick, waxy leaves that trail freely making them perfect for hanging. The tricolor is known for its lush, pink and white variegated foliage and dainty, sweetly scented flowers.

Care

☼   This plant prefers bright indirect light and can even tolerate some full sun. Morning or evening sun is ideal. They can tolerate high temperatures.

♆   Though Hoya plants can withstand some drought, during the growing season they prefer a more consistent watering schedule. Allow the soil to dry out at least halfway before watering thoroughly.

8. Pink Nerve Plant

Fittonia albivenis

The Pink Nerve plant is a spreading evergreen perennial with delicately veined, deep-green leaves.

Care

☼   As a tropical plant it does well in full sunlight, preferring bright, indirect light. It will also thrive under flourescent lights. Nerve plants love high humidity which makes them a great terrarium plant!

♆   The nerve plant likes to stay moist with regular mistings. This plant tends to be a bit dramatic, don’t be alarmed if you find it has wilted and in poor shape, with water it should spring back to life.

9. Pink Moonstones Succulent

Pachyphytum Oviferum

This is an adorably rounded soft succulent with pinkish chubby pebble-like leaves covered with a thin layer of white powder that grows on the cliffs in Central Mexico.

Care

☼   This pink succulent tolerates high heat and intense sunlight, but not frosts. It can thrive in full or partial sunlight.

♆   Water infrequently, but deeply when the soil is fully dry. Succulents must have great drainage.

LOOP, a new initiative by TerraCycle, a small waste management company from Trenton, New Jersey is aiming to reduce packaging by creating a circular delivery service. It had caught the attention of some of the world’s largest consumer goods companies including Procter & Gamble (who actually has a stake in the company), Unilever, PepsiCo, Mars Petcare, Mondelez International, Nestlé (another founding investor), Danone, and UPS. This new initiative offers an alternative to recycling – a dying industry where only 9% of plastic is actually getting recycled.

With global brand labels found on most of the trash floating around, it’s clear they are the culprit for the large amount of garbage we see in landfills, oceans, our streets and our parks. Once a product is purchased, it’s in the consumer’s hands to properly dispose of it including the packaging it came in, even though most products are not set up for success in the disposability area. With this new service from Loop consumers can still enjoy the convenience and affordability of disposables without making the waste. Manufacturers are now retaining ownership of their packaging and incentivized to invest more resources into package design and longevity.

The brains behind this delivery service is Tom Szasky, TerraCycle’s CEO. His mission – to eliminate waste first and make a profit second. Szasky targeted the top 10 companies on Greenpeace’s list of top plastic polluters. Because these companies are aware of their impact and know they have to start making changes in favor of our environment’s health, 8 out of 10 of them are now on board with Loop.

“Loop brings back the old ‘milkman model,’ where products are delivered to your door at the same time empties are picked up, washed, refilled and readied for delivery to another customer.”

Initially, Loop will carry 300 products with the intent to add to the list as they grow. The prices for these items are said to be comparable to what one would purchase them for at their nearby store. However, there is one additional charge, a fully refundable deposit for each package, which varies depending on the size and quantity of products. For instance an additional $0.25 for a bottle of cola. Shipping is free after 5 – 7 items are added to the customer’s cart. In the US items will arrive via UPS in a Loop tote bag. When a customer is finished using the products they do not need to be washed like traditional recyclables. UPS will pick up the Loop tote and transport it to a regional cleaning facility. Customers have the option to repeat the cycle or recover their deposit. Szasky said, “no matter what state it’s returned in (even if broken, because the container is the manufacturer’s responsibility), you get your deposit back in full.” The only time customers will lose out their deposit is if they fail to make a return.

Szasky addressed one of the potential drawbacks of Loop – having consumers shop at yet another retail website. But he is optimistic that this delivery service will eventually be integrated into existing online shops, including the ever so popular Amazon. There is even hope that down the road consumers will start seeing Loop packages on store shelves.

Proctor & Gamble designed a bin to hold soiled diapers and menstrual pads. It has a carbon filter to block odors. Once sent back, thanks to new technology the hygiene items are recycled, and the bin is sanitized before being sent out again. The technology turns used hygiene products into secondary raw materials for higher value applications.

Signal’s new product format features refillable toothpaste tablets called Tooth Tabs. This enables consumers to brush their teeth using less water; simply chew, brush and rinse per usual.

LOOP will be available on a pilot basis starting this Spring in New York and Paris. By the end of 2019 they are hoping to hit London, while Toronto, San Fransisco, Tokyo, and the Summer Olympics are goals for 2020.

Although I don’t personally use most of these products (because of ingredients, plus I’d rather support small businesses) this is definitely an initiative headed in the right direction!

These colorful socks started with the idea to make a difference in the lives of those in need.  FAZL was founded by Vanessa and Mike, with a goal to care for impoverished children in India, while also providing an income for women living in destitution.

SOCIAL IMPACT

Every purchase of Fazl socks helps provide orphans and vulnerable children in India with basic essentials like food, shelter, education, and clothing. 50% of profits go toward supporting children’s homes that care for the children in need. With 30% of the world’s poorest children living in India, there are a staggering 31 million orphans in desperate need of help. Fazl feels it is their highest priority to care for these children.

Fazl also created a response to the lack of employment for women. Vanessa wanted to take the skills that already existed in these communities and provide an opportunity for dignified, fair trade work. The talented women who hand knit these socks are from the communities that host these children’s homes and many are graduates themselves. Each pair of socks takes about two days to knit. The women are paid double what they would make if they were employed at their local market.

HANDMADE IN THE HIMALAYAS

The socks are handmade in the Himalayas with the highest quality materials; wool and a unique blend of acrylic & nylon. These materials ensure they are long lasting and can endure many seasons, avoiding the generation of excess waste.

Fazl distributes the materials needed at their center and the ladies are able to knit wherever its convenient for them. This is incredibly important because most of the women who live in these rural communities of North India have rigorous household duties that would interfere with seeking employment. This method ensures they can earn a reliable income no matter the location they are working from.

Vanessa and Mike frequently travel to remote parts of India to visit these communities. Some of these areas are so remote that the roads are closed 6 month out of the year due to ice and snow. Fazl makes sure to deliver all of the wool and materials before the snowy conditions hit and the roads are off limits. The following Spring they take a trip back to collect all of the hand-knit socks and then they are exported to Canada.

COMMITMENT TO FAIR TRADE

To make sure all operations align with Fazl’s values they’ve taken steps to closely monitor the production from start to finish. They’ve hosted a ladies meeting with their local mayor to discuss their fair-trade commitment to their artisans. They’ve also performed home visits to check in with the ladies, and factory inspections of their yarn and packaging manufacturers. Fazl is devoted to ensuring every step is done ethically.

WHY ORGANIC?

There are a few main reasons to choose organic bedding. One, you are supporting organic farming. You are also reducing carbon emissions because organic farming creates 60% less output of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases than conventional cotton. It’s safer for workers because the crop is not sprayed with harsh chemicals and pesticides. These toxic chemicals can also wreak havoc for people with sensitive skin. Organic fibers are better for you, and better for the environment. They can also biodegrade in a timely fashion, so if the material ends up outside somewhere, it won’t be harmful to the land.

Please keep in mind, small brands might not be able to afford certifications, but that doesn’t mean they are not a green or fair company.

DEBUNKING THREAD COUNT

We are marketed to believe that higher thread counts = better quality, but have you heard that you shouldn’t trust anything that states it has a thread count higher than 400? A thread count simply means the number of horizontal and vertical threads woven into one square inch of the fabric. That means only so many pieces of thread can fit into a specific space. With bedding, that number maxes out around 400 and anything beyond that number suggests that manufacturers had to cram extra-thin pieces of yarn to reach that higher figure. This was a way for manufacturers to set themselves apart from competition. These very fine pieces of yarn resulted in a higher-ply and therefore, a higher thread count. Instead, take a look at the cotton staple before the thread count. Superior sheets will be made from a single-ply, long-staple cotton. 200-300 thread count will deliver that softness, comfort, and quality without the increased price!
